Illegal Ivory Trade Wiping Out Africa’s Elephants

Thousands of elephants have been killed by poachers over the past decade in the West African nation of Gabon, posing a dire threat to the animals in one of the last parts of the world where their numbers have been plentiful.

According to joint research by the Gabonese National Parks Agency (Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux, or ANPN), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), poachers have killed more than 11,000 elephants in the small country since 2004 for their highly-prized tusks.
